# Detection and response modes

> Control when the copilot speaks up and how answers read.

Switch either mode at any time from the **⋯** menu on the answer panel.

## Detection

Detection controls whether the copilot surfaces answers without being asked. Asking with <kbd>Cmd</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>Enter</kbd> works in every mode.

| Mode        | What happens                                                 |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Manual**  | The copilot stays quiet until you ask. New users start here. |
| **Suggest** | Detected questions appear as an offer you can open.          |
| **Auto**    | Detected questions get an answer immediately.                |

## Response

Response controls how answers read.

| Mode             | How answers read                                 |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| **Chat**         | Concise notes and bullets.                       |
| **Teleprompter** | Phrased to say out loud, close to word for word. |
